About the Home Hearing Test

Access to a simple, accurate, reliable method of testing hearing outside the medical or commercial environment does not currently exist.

Several types of self-administered hearing tests are available via telephone, smartphone app and various Internet sites. The primary limitation of these tests is they do not use calibrated equipment and there is no control over test stimuli. Results are likely to be incomplete and inaccurate.

Unlike questionnaires and other screening tests available in various forms, the Home Hearing Test is the same type of test administered by hearing professionals. The Home Hearing Test determines when hearing should be checked by a licensed hearing professional, but does not identify the cause of hearing loss or determine what the treatment should be.

The goal of the Home Hearing Test is to provide accurate information to consumers so they can take steps toward better hearing wellness.

Home Hearing Test Earphones

For accurate results:

  1. Use only the calibrated earphones provided with the Home Hearing Test. The earphones and precision-matched sound card ensure that the test will be accurate on any Windows PC.
  2. Be sure you have a good eartip seal.
  3. Take the test only in a quiet location.
    • Look for eartip insertion instructions on the HHT QuickStart.
    • Detailed eartip insertion instructions are provided in the instructional video located on the HOME screen.

Earphone Filters

Home Hearing Test earphones have special orange filters that smooth the frequency response and prevent earwax from entering the earphones. A filter is located at the end of the earphone and is visible when the eartip is removed. If a filter becomes clogged, it should be replaced. A dirty filter will reduce earphone output. A filter should be changed if the loudness decreases or the sound quality declines.

Note: Filters are not reusable. Replacement filters can be ordered from the Accessories tab.

Removal

Note:Use the tool to remove the filter.

1. Remove eartip. 2. Insert tool into the filter. 3. Remove filter and discard.

Replacement

Note:Do not use the tool to replace the filter.

4. Insert a new filter and press
    gently against a hard surface
    to secure it in place.
5. Re-attach eartip.

If the black foam eartips do not seal the ears, try other eartips provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use this test?
Anyone who wants to check hearing status or monitor hearing over time, including persons exposed to occupational or recreational noise or music. It can be used by caretakers of aging parents or by healthcare professionals in non-traditional healthcare settings.

What makes the Home Hearing Test different from other self-tests?
Precision calibration distinguishes this from other tests performed at home, online or on a smartphone. The combination of calibrated earphones and a matched sound card ensures a high level of accuracy for a self-administered test.
The patented AMTAS® algorithm used in this test has been clinically validated.

Are special earphones required?
Yes. Test results are only valid if you use the sound card, earphones and eartips that were specifically designed for use with the Home Hearing Test.

What information is provided with this test?

  • Test results and recommendations are displayed on an audiogram (graph of hearing).
  • Results can be saved as a pdf.
  • Results can be printed.

Can I download the Home Hearing Test from the Internet?
No. The software is designed to be installed using the flash drive that comes with the product.

How reliable are test results?
Small test-retest differences are to be expected. Hearing tests have a certain amount of variability because "threshold” is defined as the sound pressure level that can be detected 50% of the time. In addition, small variations in eartips or eartip placement, recent noise exposure or even a head cold can add variability to test results.
As a result of all these factors, a difference of 10 dB or less between two hearing tests is not considered significant. Etymotic has confirmed that the differences between a hearing test by an experienced audiologist and the HHT were less than 2 dB at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz (averaged across subjects). A slightly larger, although not clinically significant, difference was found at 8000 Hz.
The purpose of the Home Hearing Test is to provide a well-calibrated screening test that indicates whether a visit to an audiologist for further testing is recommended.

Who designed the Home Hearing Test?
The Home Hearing Test was developed by leading hearing scientists, audiologists, engineers and programmers. It is supported by extensive research and partially funded by a government grant. Test interpretation was validated by an expert panel of practicing audiologists on hundreds of hearing tests. A partnership between Etymotic Research and Audiology Incorporated combines hearing test methodology with advanced electronics to create the Home Hearing Test.

Troubleshooting

No sound from the earphones
Make sure the earphones are plugged into the earphone port on the sound card (not the microphone port). For additional information, refer to the video or the section on Before Beginning the Test in the Quick Start guide that comes with the HHT.

Earphone output has decreased
Examine the eartips and earphones; they may be clogged with ear wax. You may need to change one or both filters. Replacement filters and a special tool are available as accessories at etymotic.com.

Too much background noise (possible causes)
1. The room may be too noisy. Reduce background noise by turning off TVs, radios, etc. or move to a quieter location.
2. The earphones are not sealed well in the ears. Reposition the eartips. You may want to view the earphone insertion video found on the opening screen of the HHT.

Test results indicate hearing loss, but I think I hear fine. What is recommended?
If results indicate you have some hearing loss, it is recommended that you have your hearing tested by a licensed hearing professional.

Is it possible to start the test and finish it later?
No, the test must be completed in one session. If it is interrupted at any point, results will not be recorded and you will have to start again from the beginning.

What to do if the test times out?
If no response is detected in the required time frame (about 30 seconds) the test will time out. To ensure accurate test results, you will need to restart the test.
