Power

Turns the app on and off but keeps it ready to go at a moment's notice. The main display dims to denote the off state and one touch of the power button will restart Awareness!® immediately.

Alert

Flashes to warn you of application alerts. One touch will bring up the current active alert and one touch dismisses it again.

AutoSet

When activated in Settings, on app start-up AutoSet will measure the noise around you and set the level at which the headset microphone switches on, so you hear anything that is louder than the usual background noise. If you change location or want to reset levels, touch the AutoSet logo on the main screen at any time.

Active Interrupt

Mutes your music when the microphone is triggered and turns it back up, when outside noise drops to normal levels. We strongly recommend that this is used in all noisy environments.

Programmable Noise-Isolation Controls

Includes:

- Level Meter

The main meter needle shows the level of ambient sound around you from 0% to 100%.

- Level Meter Threshold Slider

The curved blue bar on the meter sets the level at which the microphone will switch on. AutoSet does this automatically, or you can set your preferred level by touching and sliding the end of the blue bar in either direction. A reference dBA indicator will appear above the meter during Threshold Adjustment.

- Microphone

Switches the headset microphone on instantly. Perfect to hear what's going on around you without having to remove your headset.

- Mic On/Off

Switches the headset microphone on instantly. Perfect to hear what’s going on around you without having to remove your headset.

- Microphone Delay Slider (in Settings)

Sets a variable delay before the microphone switches on. Use this if wind and fabric rub are triggering the microphone unnecessarily.

- Microphone Delay Display

A small numerical display at the bottom right of the meter, shows in seconds the amount of delay you set. ALSO featured above the Microphone Delay Slider in settings.

- Microphone Level Slider

Allows you to set the microphone signal to a comfortable level. If you have to have this set too high, your music may be too loud. Take care of your ears!

Settings

Brings up controls for Microphone Delay, Active Interrupt and AutoSet, plus App version number, URLs & FAQs about Awareness!® HD and video links showing how to properly insert your Etymotic earphones for best sound. From here you can also register Awareness to get the latest news and updates.

About Essency

Formed in 2009 by experienced sound engineers and programmers, UK developer Essency builds innovative apps for mobile devices that make headphone, earphone and headset use, safer & more convenient.

AWARENESS!® The Headphone App and the 'for Etymotic' Apps are the first in a series of advanced audio Apps for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Versions for Android, Windows Phone, desktop PC and Mac will follow. Please visit www.essency.co.uk.

If you are running AWARENESS! for Etymotic with a compatible device and the program does not work,
contact the AWARENESS! for Etymotic support team.

AWARENESS!® for Etymotic cannot be used during a phone call.

AWARENESS!® for Etymotic is installed and the earphones do not work

  • Check to make sure you have not set the mic trigger level too high or the mic volume too low.
  • If you are using Etymotic earphones with no mic attached, make sure that the mic
on the iPhone or iPod touch is not obstructed or covered.
  • Also make sure that the earphone plug is plugged all the way into the jack on your device.

If you have to turn the mic level to maximum in your headset to hear,
it usually means that your music is turned up too loud. Protect your ears!

  • Try the ducking feature by clicking on the tools icon then switching on ducking.
  • This will lower your music when the mic is switched on; however, there is an iOS glitch
that may affect ducking on your device.
  • A future Apple update to iOS 4 will fix this problem.

Acoustic feedback when App is active

Mic volume may be turned up too high or the mic is too close to the earphones.

Try the following:

  • Turn the mic volume to zero by using the slider on the far right of the screen.
Then set your music or audio at a comfortable listening level.
  • Set the mic threshold to 0% by sliding your finger across the blue scale on AWARENESS! for Etymotic.
This will turn on the mic.
  • Slide the mic volume up until you can hear the mic in your earphones at a comfortable listening level.
  • Tap 'Auto' or set the mic threshold manually (by sliding your finger over the blue scale) so the mic isn't triggered
by the natural background noise. You can control the sensitivity by setting a higher or lower threshold.

AWARENESS! for Etymotic does not work with Bluetooth® headsets

Bluetooth® headset technology causes a noticeable delay in real-time applications. This is also why
Bluetooth® headsets cannot be used to watch videos without the audio going out of sync.
A Bluetooth® version may be introduced in the future.

Flashing red bar on the top of iPhone 4 when AWARENESS! for Etymotic is running

The flashing red bar is iOS telling you that the mic is in use. There is no way to turn this off because
this feature is also used for phone calls.

iPod shortcut buttons are inaccessible when AWARENESS! for Etymotic is running

AWARENESS! for Etymotic involves advanced programming and iOS has not quite caught up.
Example: When using the iPhone's built-in mic, iOS automatically disables the iPod's shortcut controls.

If AWARENESS! for Etymotic does not appear to be using the mic in the headset

Check to make sure the earphones are fully plugged into the jack on your device.
Try reconnecting the earphones and restarting AWARENESS! for Etymotic.

How to configure AWARENESS! for Etymotic

AWARENESS! for Etymotic automatically sets mic trigger at launch. Adjust by sliding your finger over the blue scale
to fine tune the mic trigger.

Adjustments

The mic volume on your headset can be turned up or down by moving the slider located to the right the screen.
You can use AutoSet anytime by tapping 'Auto'.

Note: AutoSet measures the average noise of your surroundings and sets a mic threshold just above the noise level.
This works well in most situations; however, in more dynamic environments where background noise is continually
changing, e.g., a noisy street or train station, it may be necessary to fine tune the mic threshold.
