Management Team

Etymotic Research is led by a seasoned management team. Senior management includes the following professionals:
Mead Killion Mead Killion, President/CTO (interview)
Mead Killion, Ph.D. founded Etymotic Research, Inc. in 1983. Prior to starting Etymotic, he worked for over 20 years for a major electronic component manufacturer where he designed hearing aid transducers, including microphones that were so accurate they were also used in recording and broadcast studios. Dr. Killion earned degrees in mathematics from Wabash College and the Illinois Institute of Technology, and completed his doctorate in audiology at Northwestern University. He was awarded an honorary doctor of science (Sc.D.) degree from Wabash College.

Dr. Killion teaches an advanced course in hearing aid electroacoustics at Northwestern University, where he is an adjunct professor. He has also taught audiology graduate students at Rush University and has directed graduate research at City University of New York Graduate School. Dr. Killion has lectured on hearing protection and hearing aids in 19 countries. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the Audio Engineering Society and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of hearing. He is an accomplished choir director, violinist and jazz pianist. He holds over 60 patents.

Mark Piepenbrink Mark Piepenbrink, CEO
Mark Piepenbrink, B.S., CPA has over thirty years of financial and accounting experience in manufacturing and distribution with the last ten years as Etymotic CFO. Mr. Piepenbrink spent 11 years in public accounting with KPMG Peat Marwick where he performed audits and served as advisor to owners of closely held manufacturing and distribution companies. He utilized technical abilities and past experience to develop practical solutions for business problems. Mr. Piepenbrink has had extensive experience in management, negotiation, computer modeling, strategic planning and forecasting, contract review, human resource management and organizational development.
Mark Piepenbrink Fran Wroble, CFO
Fran Wroble, B.S.B.A., CPA is a seasoned finance professional, experienced in finance and accounting from a wide array of industries that encompasses distribution, manufacturing and sales/marketing environments. Ms. Wroble’s experience includes consumer products, trade supplies, durable goods and custom manufacturing industries. She has demonstrated ability to effectively manage through diverse business conditions. She is proactive in the continuing improvement of processes and procedures to improve efficiency and reduce cost while maintaining or enhancing customer satisfaction and performance levels.
Gail Gudmundsen Gail Gudmundsen, Director Sales and Marketing
Gail Gudmundsen, Au.D., holds a doctorate in audiology. Early in her career, she provided clinical audiology services at the two largest teaching hospitals in Chicago, after which she operated a multi-office audiology private practice for over twenty years. Her experience includes teaching, research and organizational leadership. Dr. Gudmundsen has served on two state licensure boards, the board of trustees of a university and the board of directors of numerous professional organizations and foundations.
Michael Shaver Michael Shaver, Director Worldwide Sales, Consumer Products Division
Michael Shaver began his twenty-five year career in consumer electronics at Labtec Inc. where he helped lead Labtec from an obscure headphone company to a computer speaker powerhouse. At Etymotic Research, Mr. Shaver is responsible for all sales functions including distribution, OEM and retail sales. He formerly worked for Fellowes Inc. as the OEM Sales Manager for the Body Glove line of products. Previous experience also includes GN Netcom Inc. as the Director of OEM Sales, and Jabra Corporation.
